Prtc Finishes With Seven All-americans at U23/u20 World Team Trials in Geneva, Ohio

Geneva, Ohio – The PRTC finished with two top 6 team placings and seven All-Americans at the U23/U20 World Team Trials this past weekend. With 34 athletes making the trip from Philadelphia to Geneva, Ohio, a full effort was given by all.

“What impressed me the most was that we had 34 athletes who were passionate enough about Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling to dedicate part of their off-season training to compete at the World Team Trials,” said Coach Bryan Pearsall of the wrestlers who traveled west. “That is a huge commitment that shouldn’t go without praise.”

Starting on Friday, three athletes entered the U23 Greco-Roman division with all three attaining All-American status. Leading the way, Jake Hendricks placed 2nd at 82kg. Hendricks went 4-2 while dropping the best of three final series one match to two against Tyler Cunningham of MWC Wrestling Academy.

Jake Hendricks, 82kg Greco Silver Medalist

Jeremy Ridge had just one loss on the day as he placed third at 72kg. Ridge outscored his opponents 27-9 enroute to the bronze medal match where he won by medical forfeit over Brody Olson of the Minnesota Storm.

Jeremy Ridge, 72kg Greco Bronze Medalist

Completing a near marathon day in Greco, Jake Stefanowicz wrestled eight matches enroute to a 4th place finish at 77kg. Stefanowicz started the day with a 8-0 tech over Dayton Hill of O Town Wrestling Club. He lost his second match before winning through the wrestlebacks all the way to the consolation final. Dropping a 0-7 decision to Terrance Parks of New York, Stefanowicz certainly put in the work over the eight hour day.

Long time PRTC Developmental athlete and official UPenn commit, Martin Cosgrove wrestled his way through to the U20 Challenge Tournament Finals. Competing at 92kg, Cosgrove was 2-1 on the day losing to Silas Allred of the Nebraska RTC in the Finals.

Martin Cosgrove, U20 Freestyle Challenge Tournament Finalist

In U23 Freestyle, Mickey O’Malley had an impressive performance making it to the Finals for the second year in a row. Going 5-2 on the weekend at 79kg, O’Malley lost the best of three series to Dustin Plott of the Cowboy RTC in the Finals.

Coach Matt Azevedo was impressed with O’Malley. “Mickey had one of his best performances this weekend,” said Azevedo. “He was aggressive and dominant all the way to the finals. Even though he fell short in the final wrestle-off, Mickey competed hard and gave himself opportunities to win. Overall, I’m very proud of Mickey!”

Mickey O’Malley, 79kg U23 Freestyle Silver Medalist

O’Malley reached All-American status again this year, joining Ryan Miller who finished fourth at 57kg and Michael Colaiocco who finished fifth at 61kg. Miller was 4-2 while Colaiocco went 8-2 over the two day Freestyle competition.

Although the PRTC does not have a U23 World Team member this year, Pearsall is optimistic about the future. “There is no questioning the trajectory of the Philadelphia Wrestling ecosystem,” he said. “All of the organizations involved are collaborating and pushing each other to “believe in better” and constantly work toward improvement on and off the mat. The PRTC plays a pivotal role in providing the ecosystem with some of the best athletes, coaches, role models, and leaders our sport has to offer…we continue to strive for excellence in everything that we do.”

PRTC Coach and UPenn Associate Head Coach Bryan Pearsall

Next up for the PRTC is Final X on Wednesday June 8th in New York City. Jordan Burroughs will be competing for a spot on the 2022 World Team while Mark Hall will be competing to secure his third place at World Team Trials and a spot on the US National Team.

Mark Hall and David McFadden travel to Las Vegas this weekend to compete in the US Senior Nationals at the prestigious 2022 US Open. A multi-divisional event, the US Open features several tournaments in one as different age groups and styles compete throughout the weekend.

In addition to Hall and McFadden, the PRTC will have five athletes competing in the Senior Freestyle division and one athlete competing in the Senior Greco-Roman division. Competing in U20 Freestyle, there will be six athletes representing the PRTC and one in U20 Greco-Roman. Including coaches, the PRTC will have a total of twenty members traveling to the “City of Lights”

The top 7 place-winners at the Senior Nationals qualify for the upcoming World Team Trials. As the 2021 National Champion at 86kg, Hall is looking to repeat. He is the number one seed heading into competition beginning on Friday morning. After a successful training cycle that featured visits from other RTCs and members of the French and Canadian National team, Hall is prepared to compete at a high level.

“I’m ready”, says Hall. “Our team has worked hard and we’re excited to compete!”

McFadden, a U23 National Champion in 2020, is looking to make the podium at 79kg. He’ll be joined by former U20 National Champion and Drexel student-athlete Mickey O’Malley. The two are seeded 7th and 6th respectively. Placing and making it to the World Team Trials will give both an opportunity to compete for a chance to wrestle the PRTC’s Jordan Burroughs for a spot on the 2022 World Team. Burroughs, the returning World Champion at 79kg, holds the spot at Final X which will be held on June 8th in New York City.

Also competing at the Senior Nationals in freestyle will be Doug Zapf(70kg), Nick Incontrera(79kg), John Stout(86kg), and Drexel assistant coach CJ LaFragola(86kg). Jake Hendricks(82kg) will wrestle in the Senior Greco-Roman division for the PRTC.

In the U20 Freestyle division, Kelly Dunnigan(61kg), Kyle Hauserman(65kg), Aboubakare Diaby(74kg), Tate Nichter(74kg), John Janda(79kg), and Josh LaBarbera(86kg) all take the mat representing the PRTC team. LaBarbera will pull double duty competing at 87kg in the U20 Greco-Roman division.

It will take a full effort from all to bring home some hardware from this high level tournament. National Championships and All-American statuses are all within reach in Vegas for the PRTC crew.

PRTC Executive Director and Head Coach Brandon Slay will be joined by an experienced coaching staff to help him guide his athletes throughout the weekend. Roger Reina and Matt Azevedo from Penn and Drexel respectively will be in the corners along with their assistants Bryan Pearsall and Scotty Parker. PRTC Senior Athlete Richard Perry is also making the trip to assist with coaching duties.

All matches will be streamed live on Flowrestling. The tournament schedules can be found here. Competition begins Friday morning at 10am.

Drexel Announces Addition of David Mcfadden to Wrestling Staff

McFadden is a current PRTC resident athlete and will serve as a volunteer assistant.

The Mert ’67 and Joanne ’69 Hill Head Coach of Wrestling Matt Azevedo announced today the addition of four-time All-American David McFadden as a volunteer assistant coach. A graduate of Virginia Tech, McFadden will bring knowledge and experience to help Drexel continue its climb up the national ranks. Drexel Wrestling has high expectations for the 2021-22 season and the addition of McFadden will benefit the already highly talented line-up.

“David has had success as a competitor at every level and I know his wisdom and expertise will be a huge asset for our program,” Azevedo said. “David brings passion and excitement to everything he does and more importantly he embodies what it means to Bring the HEAT. His energy is contagious, and I can’t wait for him to get to work with our team.”

Pennsylvania Regional Training Center Head Coach and Executive Director Brandon Slay is equally enthusiastic about David beginning his new role.

“Part of our vision of the PRTC is to maximize the development of college wrestlers in Philly. So, having David join the Drexel coaching staff aligns with our vision, and I am very excited about the impact David will have on the Dragon wrestlers. And, since David wants to be a full-time coach when he is done competing, I am encouraged David will be able to learn from Coach Azevedo to sharpen his sword as a leader and coach,” said Slay.

McFadden was a member of the Hokies’ wrestling program from 2015 until 2020 and was a four-time All-American, a two-time ACC Champion and the 2016 ACC Freshman of the Year. In addition, McFadden was a part of the U23 World Team in 2018 and was a U23 National Champion in 2020.

The West Milford, N.J. native, graduated in 2020 from Virginia Tech with a degree in human development and arrived in Philadelphia to pursue his goal of making the U.S. Olympic/World Team while training at the Pennsylvania Regional Training Center (PRTC).

“I am super excited to join the Drexel wrestling program as the volunteer assistant coach,” McFadden said, “Not only does this allow me to keep training and competing but allows me to impact the Drexel University wrestling team directly.”
